An early botanist named “Chucky Joe” Huger spent a considerable amount of time exploring Mill Creek around Slippery Witch Falls. He described the falls as being a “slippery bitch” after having had an incident caused by unsure footing. Mrs. Perry Hinkle, his landlady, did not approve of his descriptive language and later cleaned it up to Slippery Witch.
