McGalliard Falls Park is the home of McGalliard Falls. McGalliard creek falls 40 feet over McGalliard Falls. This is a popular recreational facility located about 1 ½ miles from downtown Valdese, North Carolina. The park features nature trails, picnic areas, shelters, tennis courts, softball fields, and a playground. One of the bigger attractions is the restored grist mill. Fred Meytre originally constructed the mill in 1906. The original wheel was washed away in a flood in 1916. In 1982, efforts began anew to restore the mill to working order. The American Legion post began the project, but later the funds dried up, and interest waned. In the summer of 2002, the town began a campaign to boost tourism. Restoration of the mill is slated to be finished in time for the harvest season of 2004.
